Cookies

This site sets no cookies at all until you answer the banner. Here is exactly what happens either way.

Last updated: 18 September 2026

The short version

Until you press "Accept all", this site sets no cookies whatsoever. Not one. If you choose "Essential only", or if you ignore the banner entirely, nothing is stored on your device and nothing of Google's is ever downloaded.

If you do accept, we use cookies for two things: understanding how the site is used, and showing our ads to people who have visited it while they are on other sites.

That is unusual enough to be worth spelling out, so the rest of this page does.

Before you choose

A first visit sets no cookies. The site needs none: there is nothing to log in to, no basket and no form, so there is no session to keep track of.

Remembering your answer to the banner does not need a cookie either. Your choice is kept in your browser's local storage under the name hd-consent, which stays on your device and is never sent to our servers. It records only which button you pressed and the date.

If you choose "Essential only"

Nothing is loaded and nothing is set, beyond the record of your choice described above. Analytics is not loaded in a reduced mode - it is not loaded at all, and your browser never contacts Google.

If you choose "Accept all"

Google Analytics loads and sets two cookies:

NameWhat it doesHow long it lasts
_gaTells one browser apart from another, so we can count visitors rather than visits2 years
_ga_G655JQWY23Keeps track of the current visit for this site's analytics property2 years

Your browser then contacts www.googletagmanager.com to fetch the analytics script and sends measurements to region1.google-analytics.com, Google's European collection endpoint.

Advertising

The same permission turns on Google's advertising features, which let us show our ads to people who have visited this site while they are on other websites, and measure whether those ads worked. Google may set further cookies of its own for this, and your browser may contact Google's advertising domains as well as the analytics ones above. These are Google's cookies rather than ours; Google's cookie notice lists them.

Choosing "Essential only" turns off advertising as well as analytics. There is no middle setting, because we would rather ask one honest question than three.

Changing your mind

Clearing this site's data in your browser removes both the analytics cookies and the record of your choice, and the banner will ask again on your next visit. In most browsers this is under the padlock icon in the address bar, then site settings or cookies and site data.

You can also block cookies for this site in your browser settings. Nothing here will stop working if you do - none of these cookies is needed for the site to function.

What we do not use

  • No social media buttons or embedded widgets
  • No embedded video
  • No Google Fonts - our typefaces are served from our own servers, so loading a page does not tell a font provider you were here
  • No session cookie, because there is nothing on this site to log in to

Our CDN, Cloudflare, may set a strictly necessary cookie if it needs to check that a request is not automated. We did not observe one in normal browsing.

More detail

Our privacy policy covers what we do with information more generally, including the ordinary server records that exist whether or not you accept cookies.
